1. What made you want to be a coach and the AVID teacher?
I knew from a young age that I wanted to be a teacher. I have always enjoyed school, organization, and learning. In middle school and high school, I really enjoyed basketball and after playing for those years and a little in college, I knew it was something I wouldn’t mind doing (coaching). When the opportunity presented itself here at Zachry to do both AVID and coaching, I knew it was a perfect fit and jumped on it. I am passionate about being a life-long learner and supporting young people in their drive to be successful. Whether that’s in the classroom or on the court, I hope I fill my role well on campus.
2. What is your favorite part or memory of working at HB Zachry?
My favorite part of working at Zachry is the community. I love having sibling groups and watching whole sets of siblings come through our campus. It also builds a bond with families that I think is special.
3. If you had to pick teaching or coaching, what would you pick and why?
I am definitely a teacher first. I love coaching and the special relationship it can build with students and athletes, but at the end of the day coaches are teachers first and if I had to continue teaching without the coaching aspect, I would miss it, but I know I would continue to thrive and be passionate about my place in the classroom.
4. What was your school education like? (how did you behave when you were in school, what college did you attend)
When I was in school, I could definitely fall into the category of a “teacher’s pet.” I enjoyed school, hated getting in trouble or disappointing my teachers. School was my safe place so I looked forward to the good relationships I had with my teachers (they are part of the reason I chose to work in the education field). I didn’t get tons of support at home, so the support and affirmation I received at school helped me find my way. I was a student-athlete who followed the rules and worked hard to succeed in class. For college, I started at Northwest Vista College and then transferred and graduated through UTSA. Go Runners!
5. What is your favorite sport to watch, play, coach and why?
Now that I coach, I enjoy all watching and supporting all sports but my favorite to play as a youth was definitely basketball. I grew up watching my brother and his friends play and naturally picked it up. I was good at it so I enjoyed it. From the coaching perspective, I would say I most enjoy coaching track and soccer. I’m too passionate about basketball so it stresses me out a bit but I really enjoy working with our track and soccer athletes in the spring. I think being outside and enjoying the good weather has something to do with it as well.
